BUSIA DISTRICT COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
On 1st February 2023, Busia was joined by Hon. Hellen Asamo and a team from Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development to commemorate International Day of Persons with Disabilities at Masaba, Dream Special Needs School ( Mission for Disability) grounds under the theme; “Leadership and Mindset Change: A Tool For Inclusive development”.
The function attracted a number of dignitaries from within and outside the district to show solidarity and advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities. These included members of CSOs such as World Vision, CYSRA Uganda, ATGWU, ASHWA, Helping Hands, IPD, Engage All Africa, EASSI, UNAPD, Stanbic Bank, YES, Mission for Disability among others.
The minister emphasized the need for inclusion of people with disabilities and encouraged everyone that had no disabilities to prepare because everyone is a candidate of disability. She promised to follow up on the coding of the Mission for Disability School.
29 groups of Persons with Disabilities received 5million each from the Disability grant and were handed a dummy cheque by the Minister as beneficiaries during the function.
The Assistant Commissioner Incharge of oldest Persons and People with disabilities, Auma Emilly announced to the members of a new programs that intended to benefit older persons like Special' grant for older persons (SEGO) and mobilized older persons to register with the CDOs and form groups to benefit.
The District Chairperson and the CAO pledged to support PWDs for future functions of the same.
